This project involves the creation of two things:
  1. A timeline of significant dates pertaining to the author of choice such as when this author's books were published, as well as other significant dates in the author's life
  2. A strategy board game based on one of the books this author has written and that you have read, complete with rules, a gameboard, and game pieces

STEPS TO FOLLOW IN COMPLETING THIS PROJECT:
  1. Print off the contract and checklist for this project. Fill in and sign the contract and hand it in to your teacher. Keep the checklist in you language arts duotang or another place where you will not lose it and can access it every day of the project.
  2. Follow the remaining steps on your checklist.

THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN CREATING TIMELINES AND STRATEGY GAMES:
  • Generally speaking, timelines run from left to right in a straight line. Use a ruler and measure the years evenly. For example, 2 cm = 1 year.
  • Begin your timeline with the author's birth year, and continue to the present year.
  • Leave enough space between your years to be able to print a small description for each event. For example, if the author wrote a book every 2 years for 10 years, think about how you would fit in your written descriptions.
  • Do your timeline and game board in pencil first (in case you need to change something), then trace over with pen or fine point felt marker.
  • Make sure that you have an idea about the main purpose and rules of your strategy game before you create the board and game pieces.
  • Do not make your strategy game too complicated - it may take too long to create and may lose the interest of others
  • Try to capture the purpose of the book in your strategy game, and try to choose a book that would lend itself well to a strategy game.
  • You may wish to model your strategy game after another strategy game or you may wish to create something entirely different from any game you've played!

CRITERIA FOR MARKING THE TIMELINE AND STRATEGY GAME:
  • Content - does your timeline include all book publishing years and many significant other dates in the author's life? Does your strategy game include a detailed set of rules which clearly communicates how to play the game?
  • Organization - is your timeline organized into evenly-spaced years in which the years are written at appropriate intervals (for example, ticks for every year and numbers for every fifth year)? Are your strategy game rules clearly organized into sections (eg. Object of the game, how to play, how to win)?
  • Appearance - is your timeline and strategy game board visually appealing? Are your lines and words neatly done? Did you color your projects nicely? Did you use a ruler for straight lines? Are the years on your timeline evenly spaced out?
